1st Year Induction

Transition to Secondary School

At Le Chéile Secondary School, Ballincollig we make every effort to make the transition from Primary to Secondary school as easy as possible.

We are very aware that this transition can cause some anxiety for both students and parents alike. Therefore, we take the following steps to ease that anxiety.

  1. Open Evening

When: September of 4th/5th/6th

2. 1st Year Application Window

When: October of 6th Class

Access Admissions

3. CAT4 Entrance testing

When: January of 6th Class

4. Le Chéile School-in-Action Day

When: Spring of 6th Class

A School-in-Action day when students are in 5th/6th class, so they can begin to become familiar with the school environment and experience the ‘School in Action’.

5. Individual Parent & Student Meeting

When: June of 6th Class

In June, incoming students and parents are invited to meet with the Principal individually to voice any concerns before commencing 1st year.

6. 1st Year Induction Week

When: August of 1st Year

We value a comprehensive induction programme when the students commence 1st year. Our induction includes: a creativity induction, an ICT induction, a Learning and Teaching induction, and a sports induction. This allows the students to get to know each other in the first week in a more relaxed setting without the constraints of the formal timetable.

We have a ‘Meitheal’ (Support) group in place for 1st years made up of 2nd year students. Each 1st year student is allocated a ‘Cara’ (friend) who will be their mentor for the duration of their 1st Year.

A dedicated 1st year only homework club. 1st year students are supported by subject teachers and TY students to adjust to adjust to the demands of homework at secondary school.
